contemplating the fall

Before back to school hits, and now that you have test scores and grades in hand, it might be a good time to peruse that enormous high school directory, double checking individual screens for the schools you’re interested in.

If a school screens for Brooklyn first and you live in Manhattan, not a smart choice. If they take kids with double fours and yours has 2s and 3s, it shouldn’t be at the top of your list. If your child has an 83 average and they are looking for 90 plus, it’s probably not the best fit for you guys. There are so many kids in the system that many schools fill up and don’t have room for students outside the screen. But, the good news is that there are plenty of schools out there to choose from.

Both times I toured Baruch High School the principal mentioned that they are listed on over 6000 applications. More than half of those though were from students who don’t fit their screen. So families use up a spot on their lists that there was no chance of them getting. Not great planning.

Check out schools you’ve heard of. Peruse the book and see if something sounds interesting that’s off the beaten path. And I’m attaching a list that an organization I know put together of high schools they thought did a good job of preparing kids for college. Something on the list might strike you as a good potential fit:
