This weekend the borough wide high school fairs are happening. Specifics are below and there’s also a link to the DOE website for more info as well.
This could be a good opportunity to check out schools in a less overwhelming environment than the monster fair at Brooklyn Tech. It also can be a chance to talk one on one, as opposed to being in a bigger group on a tour.
And again, thanks to all for sharing feedback about tours and open houses. I’ll repeat that not every school will be the right fit for every family. I’ll also add that 45 minutes or an hour inside a school can give you a snapshot but certainly not the whole picture. Not all tours/open houses are created equal. Not all student tour guides are trained the same way. Not everyone you meet will necessarily be in the best mood or laser focused after having already put in a full day at work. As I’ve said before, it’s like comparing apples and zebras sometimes.
Schools are responsible for how they showcase themselves to prospective families and that’s a serious undertaking. Set ups, sign ups, organization, staffing, providing information and materials, training ever changing guides, educating families, all on top of managing students, staff and schools is a significant challenge. Some school events run like well oiled machines, others not so much. And while that might factor into your decision making about a school, keep in mind that your quick visit is just that. There’s plenty more to consider when weighing options.
