Beacon has their fall open house dates up:
For students in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island: Thursday, October 11, 2018, 4:30PM – 7PM
For students in the Bronx and Manhattan, Tuesday, October 30, 2018, 4:30PM – 7PM
If you can’t make the date for your borough, go to the other one. No registration is needed at these and no one checks you in.
MORE INFO about their process (from their website):
There will be an online application form for an interview at the Beacon School that will be available on our website starting October 22, 2018 through November 16, 2018. Students will be able to sign for interviews on one of the following dates:
- Saturday/Sunday, November 17-18
- Saturday/Sunday, December 1-2
- Tuesday, December 11
NOTE (this is from me): That last Tuesday date is AFTER applications are due. I’m a big fan of doing interviews before applications are submitted. Interviews can change how your child feels about a school and might change your ranking choices.
ALSO, they don’t interview everyone who submits a portfolio. Portfolio info is here: http://www.beaconschool.org/admissions/student-portfolio/
What happens is you sign up for an interview when that goes live, you drop off your child’s portfolio, and then they let you know whether an interview’s been granted. In the past it seems as long as your child matches the rubric Beacon has listed in the HS directory, they get an interview.
A quick note about FALL STUFF! Not all schools update their websites. There’s info out there now (for example, ElRo and Bard) about tours/open houses that have already happened. While at first glance it might seem that things are full, it’s just that nothing has been updated for fall 2018 yet. Breathe deep.
